The Shredder Method — How Kids Get Mountain Ready | Shredder

The Shredder Method

From "I'm scared"
to "watch me."

That’s the Shredder Method.

A step-by-step indoor progression that turns first-time kids into confident young skiers before they ever reach the mountain. First slides. First stops. First turns. Then the moment every parent is hoping for: a kid who looks down a green run and believes they belong there.

Most kids go from never-skied to confident on greens in about six weeks.

Not because they’re fearless.
Because they’re prepared.

Why We Built This

A mountain lesson has too many variables.
This doesn't.

01The problem

On the mountain, you hope the weather cooperates. You hope your kid stays warm enough to focus. You hope the group is the right size, the instructor clicks, and the lesson time doesn't disappear before something finally sticks.

That's a lot to leave to chance.

02The insight

You don't teach a child to swim by dropping them in the ocean. You start in a pool — warm, controlled, safe, and built for learning.

Skiing never had that.

03The build

So we built it.

An indoor, climate-controlled slope where kids can learn the real mechanics of skiing first: balance, edging, stopping, turning, and control. No cold. No lift lines. No mountain-day chaos. Just focused progression, patient coaching, and a child who arrives at the mountain already knowing what to do.

The Common Path
The Resort Approach
  • Drive 2–3 hours to the mountain
  • Rent cold, unfamiliar gear at altitude
  • New instructor and group every visit — placement is best-guess
  • Snow, weather, and altitude are wildcards
  • One long day, then back to zero until the next trip
  • Repeat from scratch next winter
VS
A Better Way
The Shredder Approach
  • 15 minutes from your front door
  • Fitted gear, same familiar facility, every week
  • Same coach every week — they know your kid's name
  • Climate-controlled, 365 days a year
  • Real skills that compound session to session
  • Mountain day is the victory lap, not the classroom
★★★★★

"It was so much easier than going all the way up to the mountains to try to teach him, plus significantly cheaper per session vs paying for lessons on the mountains."

What Makes It a Method

A lesson teaches a skill.
A method builds a skier.

One lesson can help a child try skiing. A method gives them a clear progression — with every skill taught in the right order, every week building on the last, and every child moving toward the same goal: becoming Mountain Ready.

Four things make the Shredder Method work — and they are the reason beginners become confident on the mountain.

Engineered slope

A slope built to carve and edge like snow, indoors, ~70°F, 365 days a year. The same conditions every session — so skills build instead of resetting.

Progression, not one-offs

Every week builds on the last and adds one new skill. It's a path, not a series of unrelated lessons — each visit moves your child forward.

A clear finish line

Not "let's see how today goes." Every coach follows the same progression toward one defined outcome: Mountain Ready. And every session ends with a quick recap — what your child worked on, what clicked, and what's next.

Repetition where it matters

Beginners waste mountain time cold, waiting in lines, and riding lifts. Here, the whole session is reps on the actual skill — a kid gets more practice in a month than in two mountain trips a year.

The mountain is the victory lap — not the classroom.

What Actually Happens

What a Shredder
session looks like.

Parents often ask: what does my child actually do for 45 minutes? Here's a typical session from drop-off to pick-up.

Minutes 0–5
Gear up & greet

Gear is already fitted and waiting. Your child's coach greets them by name. New kids get a tour of the slope. Regulars are already excited to show off what they've been working on.

Minutes 5–20
Warm-up & review

The coach reviews last session's skills with games and drills. Kids don't realize they're practicing — they're playing. This is where confidence is quietly built.

Minutes 20–40
New skill introduction

Each session introduces one new skill — a new turn, a speed control technique, a steeper section. The coach demonstrates, coaches, and gives real-time feedback on every run.

Minutes 40–45
Recap & high-five

Every session ends with a brief parent update — what they worked on, what clicked, what's next. Your child gets a high-five and is already asking when they come back.

The Path

Every skier climbs
the same path.

One skill at a time, at their own pace, all the way to a real green run. It's a progression — not levels a kid gets locked into — and every child moves up the same climb.

First steps

Standing, sliding, comfortable on snow.

Stopping on demand

Real control — stops when they mean to.

Turning with intention

Changing direction on purpose.

Linking turns

Turn into turn, with rhythm.

Green-run confidence

A green top-to-bottom, in control.

Mountain Ready

Loads the lift, links turns, rides on their own.

The Shredder Philosophy

Every session is a win.The next one's a bigger one.

Shredder is not a course your family has to finish. It is a progression your child can follow as far as you want to go.

Even one visit matters. Your child gets more comfortable, more capable, and more in control. And for most kids, that first win is exactly what makes them want the next one.

That is the point of the Shredder Method: every session builds something real.

More balance. More control. More confidence.
More readiness for the mountain.

Mountain Ready is not a session count. It is a standard — four things a child can do before they take those skills outside.

So come for one visit, one season, or keep climbing with us. However far your family goes, your child leaves better than they came in.

What "Mountain Ready" Means

Everyone says their kid "took lessons." We can tell you exactly what they learned.

Mountain Ready is a real standard — four skills a child needs before the mountain feels like fun instead of survival:

Loads and rides a chairlift safely, with confidence.
Controls speed and stops on demand.
Links controlled turns down a green run.
Rides independently — so you actually get to ski, too.

That last one changes the whole day.

It is the difference between managing the bunny hill and skiing the mountain together as a family.

Most kids get there in about six weeks. Not luck. A method.

"After six visits they skied greens from the top — better than me."

The People Behind the Magic

Coaches Who Actually
Get Kids.

Entrusting a stranger with your child is a big deal. Here's what you're actually getting when you hand off your kid at the door.

PSIA-AASI Curriculum

Every Shredder coach teaches from the PSIA-AASI curriculum — skiing's gold standard, the same framework used at world-class mountain resorts. There's a method to the madness. Your kid is learning exactly what they're supposed to learn, when they're supposed to learn it. We fully expect them to crush it on the mountain.

Happy Kids Learn Faster

Ski technique is half the equation. The #1 goal is always to see your kid head home happy — and hopefully tired too! The more they link skiing and riding to an awesome experience, the faster you develop your #1 ski buddy.

Same Coach. Every Week. On Purpose.

Small groups. Same coach every week. By session two your kid isn't just excited to ski — they're excited to see their coach. That's not an accident. Our coaches choose this because they love what happens when a nervous kid becomes an unstoppable one.

Skeptic → Believer
"My initial reaction was 'no way, skiing is outside.' But now I'm psyched that my kids can learn skills without the gear and weather distractions and I'm hoping we will be skiing as a family sooner!"

Questions Parents Ask.

Yes — directly. Our slope is engineered to edge and carve like real snow, so balance, weight transfer, and turn mechanics work the same way indoors as they do outside. Weekly practice also builds far more repetition than one or two mountain trips a year. Most families tell us their kids ski better, and with more confidence, after training indoors first.

For regular sessions, drop-off is encouraged — kids focus better and build independence faster without a parent in view. Yeti School and Open Gyms are the exceptions; those are parent-and-child by design. Lobby viewing varies by facility, and coaches often wave parents over for the last few minutes to watch and grab a photo.

Comfortable athletic clothes — leggings or sweatpants and a long-sleeve shirt. No snow gear needed; the facility is a climate-controlled ~70°F. We provide all ski and snowboard gear, including boots and helmet, fitted fresh each visit. Just bring socks.

Most kids go from never-skied to confident on a green run in about six weeks. It varies by child and how often they ski — Mountain Ready is a standard of four skills a kid can do, not a fixed count — but the structured progression is what makes the timeline predictable.
